The Art of Japanese Calligraphy

Calligraphy serves many purposes in modern Japan. Like any other written language, it is a form of communication, a way to record data, and a system to express mathamatical logic. But unlike many languages, Japanese calligraphy can be much more. The written language of Japan is an art form, painted in beautiful script, and inlaid with many peices and subtleties. The Japanese language can often times express in one word what would take several in English. It is not, however, something to be taken lightly. Written Japanese is very complex. If you are interested in learning it, this website will give you a brief understanding of how the language works and where to begin your studies.

An Honoric Language

Japanese is set up on a system of formalities and complexities that are designed to indicate the relative status of the speaker, the person being spoken to, and the person being spoken of. This is what is refered to as an honorific language, and is only one example of how the complicated set up of Japanese can make communication more efficient. Many concepts that would take several words in English can be expressed in one in Japanese.
